Finding Motivation to Workout

Finding Motivation to Workout

The first step to working out is finding the motivation to do so. Finding motivation, whether it is intrinsic or extrinsic, can be tough, but it is key. Here are some tips to help you create motivation and get to that workout:

Workout with a friend- Planning to workout with a friend will make you more likely to stick to it. No one wants to be the friend that bailed on spinning class. Plus, when you work out with a buddy, you can push each other, give each other tips, try new workouts together, and spend time with a good friend!

When you work out, your brain produces endorphins as well as dopamine. These neurotransmitters increase your happiness level. When you work out with a good friend, your brain also produces oxytocin and serotonin; both of these increase your happiness level as well. Bonus happiness hit!

Create goals and rewards- Creating goals and rewards will encourage you to workout. Goals can be weight loss based or workout based (EX: “My goal is to workout at least 15 days this month”). I don't recommend food as a reward, because this puts food in a position of power. Instead, indulge occasionally but also focus on moderation. If you accomplish your goal, treat yourself to a new book, a manicure, new workout shoes, or anything else you like.

Have a workout plan- Your plan does not have to be specific, but having an idea of the type of workout you want to accomplish will encourage you to stick to it. Maybe you know exactly what exercises you are going to do or maybe you decide it’s leg day. Either way, having a general plan can help create motivation.

Try a new workout- This can really create motivation if you seem to be stuck in your workout routine. Trying a new workout or class can create excitement in your weekly routine. You may even have a new favorite workout after trying something new!

Schedule a workout time- You can either devote a specific time to working out (EX: “I will workout from 7-8 p.m. tonight”) or plan on a general time (EX: “I will workout right after my last class today”).  Either way, make sure you hold yourself accountable to working out at this time.

Wear cute workout clothes- If you look good, you feel good. The same is true for workout clothes. Wear your favorite shirt, best pair of leggings, or new tennis shoes for some motivation. You’ll feel good about yourself and  want to show it off!

Create a fun playlist- Have a fun, upbeat playlist that you listen to only while working out. This can create motivation, as you will look forward to listening to good music while working out.

I hope these tips help you. If you have any other ways you create motivation to workout, feel free to leave them in the comments!
